I should get this started...

I did not manage (to my great chagrin) to see the Dan on the Everything Must Go tour. Did anyone here see it? Where? And how was it?

And, while I'm at it, how do we feel the new album stands up to the '70s material?

Hey I saw it. I got sixth row at the Universal in LA. I've seen all their tours since '93. I was too young in the 70s. They were killer. It was a fan's show and had a lot of energy.

I am not sure their new album stands up to the 70's standards. But Steely Dan couldn't do a bad album.

I saw the Dan twice on the EMG tour, once in Orange County CA and once at Coors Ampitheatre in San Diego. Killer show. Seeing and hearing Keith Carlock live was just about worth the price of admission alone--wow, that guy can do, like, umpty-zillion polyrhythms without even breaking a sweat.

The only thing I could fault this tour for, was playing lots and lots of the old hits at the expense of deep-album cuts and the newest material. I realize a lot of people might think that's a plus, not a minus; plus, if you're trying to fill those big venues, you need to reach out to the casual fans who only know "Peg" and "Josie" and such. Ah well. Such are the realities of touring.

I like EMG a lot. It was kind of a "stealth" album for me, in that it didn't do a whole lot for me on first listen, except that I couldn't then explain why various of the tunes thereafter got stuck in my head and wouldn't leave. On subsequent listens it really grew on me. I find it hard to compare it to the 70s albums in any kind of "better than/worse than" way, as the 70s albums have many years of my memories attached to them. I will say I think EMG is a fine hunk o' music, a respectable addition to the discography--"Pixeleen" is IMO brilliant. We'll see how we all feel about it a decade down the line (let's hope we don't have to wait that long for yet more output from Don'n'Walt--rumors were that Fagen was contemplating another solo effort).

Huh! A 3rd Fagen solo album in 20 years, wouldn't want Donald to break a sweat or anything...

As for EMG, I prefer it to 2AN, actually. Not that 2 Against Nature is a bad albu in any way, it's simply that EMG is a more solid, complete effort, I guess.

I agree that it will be interesting to see what we all think ten years further down the pike... will EMG compare favorably to Aja, for example?

i think that EMG rocks. the title track gives me chills and I think that godwhackers stands up to the best of them. I just don't think it offers the 25 years or so of nostalgia that comes with rikki or kid charlamagne. in fact I was preety exited when they included godwhackers in the set here in LA. it was unfortunate that 95% of the audience did not echo my enthusiasm. of course as earlier stated, I have yet to hear a Dan instalment that did not please me. what else was released around the same time as EMG that would be worth buying?

p.s. i dont know where the hell preety came from.
oh ya, one downfall of the EMG tour... The backup singers complete inability to dance in time with the music or each other was very distracting.
