...Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail,
Those test tubes and the scale,
Just get it all out of here.
...Is there gas in the car?
....Is there gas in the car?
I think the people down the hall know who you are!
Get along....
This is so cool, Steely Dan was and still is such a huge part of my life. First heard them in '74...
Gawd I'm old.

Mon, November 17, 2003 - 6:27 PMI had a friend at university who called me Kid Charlemagne... indeed, she still does.
One of my favorite SD songs. -

Mon, January 12, 2004 - 6:11 PMOh I love Kid Charlamagne!! Isn't that about Albert Hoffman (the guy who invented acid)? That's what I've heard. -

Fri, January 16, 2004 - 3:13 PMDonald and Walter said, just a few years ago, that it was about several drug dealers they knew, or knew of, in San Francisco... they mentioned names, but I do not recall them at the moment... that they combined and fictionalized into one person, who meets a sorry fate.

Fri, November 28, 2003 - 10:14 AMY'know, it just dawned on me that one of the main reasons SD has held its place in my collection, i.e. never been 'burned' and sacrificed at the resale shops, is their humor. It's clear they take their musianship very seriously, but the humor is always there in the writing and performance. Love that.

Fri, February 27, 2004 - 10:38 PMI dunno...'tis so hard to pick a fav...I think I'd have to say either Haitian Divorce, or Sign In Stranger... -

Sat, February 28, 2004 - 8:51 AMHmmm... I have to admit, those are two songs I've not really listened to very closely. I will have to give them another listen and see what I think.
I've been listening to "Countdown to Ecstasy" a great deal of late, and that is one damn good album. My current favorite.
My alltime favorite album, though, will always be "Aja". -

Re: K. C.
Sat, February 28, 2004 - 9:23 AMWell, for me, my love of "Haitian Divorce" & "Sign In Stranger" have less to do with the overt meaning of the lyrics, and more to do with the vehicle of delivery. While the seamless fluidity of works like "FM" epitomize the genre of the group, I'm drawn to the grittiness of these two, indeed the entire Royal Scam album; I think it's a side of their musicianship they never explored so thoroughly in any of their other albums.
Perhaps the fact that I'm also a fan of reggae has something to do with it? :P

Mon, March 1, 2004 - 8:33 PMOh yes, Aja is so beautiful... love it!
And their humor is also a big draw too- I love going into a grocery and hearing "Hey 19"... so dirty!!! -

My Song
Wed, December 29, 2004 - 9:21 PMIn '97, my then-husband and I separated. It was pretty weird, quite psychologically wearing on me and my kids. I had a copy of Steely Dan Gold and it was the one CD that always got me in a better mood. The song that did it for me was "King of the World". Years later, it still makes me feel good.
